This album cover has heavily influenced ours, in the hope that we can enhance and transform this piece into our own style. The cover is very simple yet effective, showing lots of the performer himself, essentially what we want to be achieving as the indie/rock genre we have chosen is largely performanced based. The plain white background helps add to this enabling the artist to stand out, and also on reflection showing that like in the song he has 'nothing'.

We are underway with our ancilliary texts, and have looked ofr inspiration from the likes of Olly Murs and Ellie Goulding for our particular pieces.

Ancillary Text Shoot
Images taken from the photo shoot for the Ancillary Texts. The Main song of the album and our chosen song for performance is 'Nothing', which tells the story of a girl that is no longer around. In the image we have tried to represent or atleast give the audience clues to this by involving a photo frame, and the artist with expressions of reflection.

The Script- Nothing- Lyrics
[Verse 1] Am I better off dead Am I better off a quitter They say I'm better off now Than i ever was with her As they take me to my local down the street I'm smiling but I'm dying trying not to drag my feet They say a few drinks will help me to forget her But after one too many I know that I'm never Only they can see where this is gonna end But they all think I'm crazy but to me it's perfect sense [Chorus] And my mates are all there trying to calm me down 'Cause I'm shouting your name all over town I'm swearing if i go there now I can change your mind turn it all around And I know that I'm drunk but I'll say the words And she'll listen this time even though their slurred Dial her number and confess to her I'm still in love but all i heard was nothing [Verse 2] So I stumble there, along the railings and the fences I know if I'm face to face that she'll come to her senses Every drunk step i take leads me to her door If she sees how much I'm hurting She'll take me back for sure [Chorus] She said nothing Oh I wanted words but all I heard was nothing Oh I got nothing Nothing I got nothing Nothing Oh I wanted words but all I heard was nothing [Verse 3] Oh sometimes love is intoxicating Oh you're coming down your hands are shaking When you realise there's no one waiting Am I better off dead Am I better off a quitter They say I'm better off now Than I ever was with her [Chorus] She said nothing Oh I wanted words but all I heard was nothing Oh I got nothing Nothing I got nothing Nothing Oh I wanted words but all I heard was nothing Oh I got nothing I got nothing I got nothing

Andrew Goodwin's Theory (1922)
Andrew Goodwin argues that in music video 'Narrative relations are highly complex' and meaining can be created from the individual audio-viewers musical personal musical taste to sophisticated intertextuality that uses multidiscrusive phenomena of western cultutere. Many are dominated by advertising references, film pastiche and reinforce the postmodern 're-use' traiditon.

We cry- The Script
A similar style and feel is in this song, to our chosen single entitled 'Nothing'. We Cry's lyrics depict lives struggles and how at the start we have dreams and ambitions to change the world and become somebody but it never works out this way. An original and authentic style of editing is adapted which suits the sad nature of the song. The Script, fitting into the 'rock' and 'indie' genre, follow the stereotypical codes and conventions of a indie/rock music video, with the screenplay being dark and dirty, looking unpolished. There are 3 main narratives within the video, and 3 different scenes which represent these. The first shows the main singer within the band, walking through a city. The second shows the full band rehearsing the song, within a run down, amateur front living room set up. Finally the third shows reflections and brief glimpses of city life. The song is made to look very natural and rough, with people walking across the camera and blocking shots (2:30). Thus reflecting the meaning of the song. A main convention of the music video is editing to the beat. This also occurs in we cry, often the character can be seen walking down the street in a medium shot and his body movements (footsteps) match that of the beat. The camera is nearly always a close up or medium close up so that we can see the singer, as essentially this is what is being promoted and what the audience is wanting to see, Often the background is blurred to reinforce this. The shots showing city life depict people in ordinary everyday jobs, linking back to the meaning of how people when younger long for being somebody but for the majority it never ends this way. The second narrative which see's the band set up within a staged area performing their song is another typical convention of music videos and especially those fitting into the indie genre.

Music Genre Videos Conventions
Indie: We expect to see live stage performances, or a quite dirty low budget feel to a video, reflecting the lifestyle.
Hip/Hop: Often Hip Hop videos are laidened with Women/Cars/Money/Big Houses/ Bling and alcohol, the videos are a way of showing off for rap stars.
R'n'B: These vidoes are very glamourous, and can include dance routines, accompanied more often than not by a narrative.
Pop: Include alot of close ups or performance shots of the artist, along with dance routines, and shots of fans or followings.
Rock: Often include live performances and visuals of fans in mosh pits, usually quite dark and moody.

Music Videos
Music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music/song. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos go back much further, they came into their own in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium, and later with the launch of VH1. The term "music video" first came into popular usage in the early 1980s. Prior to that time, these works were described by various terms including "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional (promo) clip" or "film clip". In Chinese entertainment, music videos were simply known as MTVs because the network was responsible for bringing music videos to popularity in that country.
Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.
